It turns out that Chinese smartphone giant OPPO has significantly raised its sales targets for this year. On September 7, OPPO Vice President Liu Bo revised the global sales target for the July-December 2020 period to 100 million units in an internal notice to business partners (such as parts manufacturers and distributors). At the same time, it revealed that it has raised its sales target for the Chinese market by more than 30%.
According to data from a market research company, OPPO's global shipments in the January-June period of 2020 were 46.6 million units. Of these, 25.9 million were for the Chinese market. With this revision of the target, the global sales target for the full year of 2020 is 146.6 million units, which is a 28% increase from the actual shipment in 2019.
"OPPO's boldly raised target is behind the desire to take Huawei's market share." Jia Mo, an analyst at market research firm Canalys, said so.
Huawei will find it difficult to stably procure semiconductors and software after September 15th due to the impact of the US government's tightening of sanctions. As a result, Huawei's smartphone shipments will drop significantly, "which could lead to structural changes in the market," Jia said.
Due to the embargo announced by the US Department of Commerce on May 15, Huawei-designed semiconductors were commissioned to be manufactured by Taiwanese manufacturers. TSMC and Core International Integrated Circuit Manufacturing (SMIC) will not be able to ship products to Huawei after the grace period ends on September 14. On Aug. 17, sanctions were further tightened, closing loopholes for Huawei to procure chips (customized for Huawei) from outside semiconductor design firms.
Huawei shipped 241 million smartphones in 2019, ranking second with a global market share of 17.6% and topping the Chinese market with a market share of 38.5%. However, if the supply of semiconductors were to completely stop, production would be forced to stop when parts inventories ran out.
This article is provided by Caixin"For manufacturers with the ability to increase the production of smartphones in a short period of time, Huawei's slump is a good opportunity to expand its market share." The aforementioned Mr. Jia points out that. In the Chinese market, OPPO and vivo, which have a solid sales network of real stores, are in an advantageous position, and in overseas markets, Xiaomi has a great opportunity because many of its destinations overlap with Huawei.
